Description

EVA Foam: E700 High-Density EVA closed-cell foam with a hardness of 70-75° Durometer Shore C. Eva Foam is made from Ethylene Vinyl Acetate and blended copolymers, which gives it an elastic quality. Because it is chemically cross-linked, the result is a uniform cell structure and a semi-rigid sheet that holds its shape. In addition, EVA foam is known for its shock-absorbing and buoyancy properties, as well as its resistance to water, UV radiation and cracking. As a result, it turns up across footwear midsoles, orthotics, sports equipment, packing, flooring, and props and costumes for cosplay. It can also be shaped with heat, glued to other materials and painted, so it suits production runs and one-off builds alike. Moreover, it has a smooth texture on both sides and comes in a range of thicknesses and densities, which means you can match the sheet to the job instead of working around it. This 4mm gauge in particular sits between the thin control layers and the thicker blank stock, so it is the one most workshops keep on the shelf.

Working with 4mm EVA foam

At 4mm the sheet still cuts cleanly with a sharp utility knife, so most shops do not need a die or a band knife for one-off work. However, a fresh blade matters more than pressure — a dull edge drags and leaves a ragged wall rather than a clean one. For repeat shapes, on the other hand, a clicker die pays for itself quickly at this gauge. Because the foam is closed-cell, it takes contact cement well once the surface is roughed with 60 to 80 grit and wiped free of dust. In addition, it heat-forms at low temperature, so a heat gun or an oven set gently will let it take the shape of a last or a positive cast and hold it as it cools. Do not rush that step, though: overheating shrinks the cell structure and the sheet loses thickness where you least want it. Finally, edges bevel and skive well on a grinder. As a result, a 4mm layer can be feathered down to nothing at its border, which is exactly what you want where a post or a reinforcement has to disappear under a top cover instead of announcing itself to the foot.

Eva foam for orthotics and orthopedic footwear

At 4mm this is the standard posting and base gauge — enough material to grind a real correction into, still slim enough to sit under a top cover in an ordinary shoe. At 70-75° Shore C the post holds its angle instead of compressing away. Orthotic labs, pedorthists and shoe repair shops reach for this eva foam sheet for:
