Burgundy cavallino calfskin is a hair-on calf hide with the coat clipped short and dyed a deep wine red through the hair. The close pile reads as a dense velvet rather than a shaggy pelt, which is why cavallino cuts and sews far more predictably than a long-hair hide. Hides run 3-8 square feet at 2/3 oz.

Hair lies in one direction, so cut from the back with a blade rather than shears and lay all the panels of a project the same way round, or they will read as two different shades.
