Description
Short hair cavallino is a hair-on calfskin with the coat clipped close, so the hide reads as a dense, even velvet rather than a shaggy pelt. Cavallino is the Italian trade name for this leather and it is prized in footwear and bag work for exactly that: a natural coat with a short, uniform pile that takes a clean cut edge. This is the Black, dyed through the hair. Hides run 3-8 square feet at 2/3 oz.
Why Choose Short Hair Cavallino Calfskin
- Close-clipped coat with a dense, even pile – it cuts and sews far more predictably than a long-hair hide
- Calfskin base, finer and more uniform than cowhide of the same weight
- Lies flat under a seam, so it suits structured bags and shoe uppers
- Five size bands from 3-4 up to 7-8 sq. ft., so you buy close to what you need
- A true black through the hair, not a surface print

The Hide
Ordering
Short hair cavallino calfskin is sold by the hide. Hair lies in one direction, so cut from the back with a blade rather than shears and lay all the panels of a project the same way round, or they will read as two different shades. Every hide is a natural coat, so density and markings vary – order everything for one project together. For the long-hair version and the rest of the range see our Hair-On Calfskin selection, or browse our Hair-On Cowhide. For current stock or volume pricing, email Info@Avetcoinc.com or call 818-890-6680.
Disclaimer: These leathers are free of PCP, Azo Pigments, Chrome VI, Formaldehyde, and APEO.
