Description

This is economy veg tan tooling leather: natural, undyed double shoulders at 4/5 oz. (1.6-2.0 mm), vegetable tanned and ready to carve, stamp, tool, dye and burnish. Economy grade means the hides are sold as they come, so expect range marks, brands, healed scars and shade variation across the piece – the working surface is good, the price reflects the character. Shoulders run 9-13 square feet.

Why Choose Veg Tan Tooling Leather

  • Vegetable tanned, so it tools, stamps, carves, molds and burnishes the way chrome-tanned leather cannot
  • Natural and undyed – takes dye, antique, stain and oil evenly, so you choose the color
  • 4/5 oz. is the practical middle weight: heavy enough to hold a stamp impression, light enough to fold and stitch
  • Cut from double shoulders, a firm and consistent part of the hide with little stretch
  • Economy pricing for practice pieces, classes, prototypes and production where marks do not matter

  • Wallets, card cases, knife sheaths and holsters
  • Belts, straps, dog collars and key fobs
  • Wet-molded cases, trays and boxes
  • Leathercraft classes, practice work and pattern testing

Ordering

Economy veg tan tooling leather is sold by the shoulder, and each one falls within the size range you choose. Case the leather with water before tooling and let it return toward its natural color before you strike. Plan the cut around the marks – that is what makes this grade economical.
