Working With Vegetable Tan Tooling Leather
At 2.8 – 3.2 mm this is a structural weight, a step lighter than the 8/9 oz. Case it with water before tooling or stamping so the fibres compress and hold the impression, and let it dry back before dyeing. It stitches well once the holes are punched or chiselled — at this weight you mark and pierce the stitch line rather than sewing straight through.
Single shoulders are a practical cut for belts and straps without buying a full side. Lay long runs along the backbone line where the fibre is tightest, and keep looser belly-side areas for parts that will be backed or lined.

Please Note:
As with all genuine leather, it’s completely normal for hides to have small holes or irregular edges, especially near the perimeter. These are part of the natural shape and not considered defects.
