Black crust veg tan tooling leather is a vegetable-tanned double shoulder dyed black in the drum and left in crust – no topcoat, no finish sprayed over it. That is what separates it from a finished black hide: the surface is still open, so it takes tooling, stamping and burnishing the way natural veg tan does, but you skip the dyeing step. Shoulders run 13-16 square feet at 8/9 oz. (3.2-3.6 mm).
