Description
Black crust vegetable tanned tooling leather in a heavy 8/9 oz weight, tanned in Mexico and supplied as single shoulders from 5–6 up to 7–8 sq. ft. The charcoal black is struck through, so cut edges and tooled impressions stay black rather than showing a pale core.

Working With Black Crust Veg Tan
At 3.2 – 3.6 mm with a stiff temper, this is a structural weight. Case it with water before tooling or stamping so the fibres compress and hold the impression, and let it dry back before finishing.
Crust means the leather is tanned and dyed but not topcoated, so the surface is still open. Test any finish, edge treatment or resist on an offcut before committing — and expect the struck-through black to work in your favour on burnished edges.

Please Note:
As with all genuine leather, it’s completely normal for hides to have small holes or irregular edges, especially near the perimeter. These are part of the natural shape and not considered defects.
