Working With Soft Veg Tan Leather

At 1.2 mm with a soft temper, it folds readily and will also take tooling and stamping, though a softer temper holds a shallower impression than a firm tooling weight. Because it is undyed it takes dye, stain and finish evenly, and like all vegetable tanned leather it darkens gently with light and handling.

Edges can be burnished, though a soft temper will not slick as hard as firm tooling leather. For belts and straps that need to stay rigid, back the strap or step up to a firmer weight.

Please Note:

As with all genuine leather, it’s completely normal for hides to have small holes or irregular edges, especially near the perimeter. These are part of the natural shape and not considered defects.
